SHIBPUR PUBLIC LIBRARY was established in the year 1874. From the old records and documents we have come to know that the library was first established in a room at Halderpara Lane of , Shibpur under the name of “NEWS ROOM” BY Late KANGALI CHARAN HALDER.
After two years News Room shifted to a rented room at 37 Raj Narayan Roy Chowdhury Ghat Road . Only around 7000 people were residing in Shibpur at that time. The name of the Library was changed to “ THE SHIBPUR READING ROOM” . The general people of Shibpur had shown their interest towards the Library and contributes books, periodicals etc to the Libraray . The stock of Books of different subjects, languages increased rapidly. But due to some circumstances the officials of the Library divided into two sections and library activities certainly collapsed.
To solve the problems one of the renowned citizen of Shibpur Late Roy Raj Kumar Sen Bahadur took initiative and a friendly settlement came out at last. In the year 1878 the Library Activities started again under a new name “SHIBPUR PUBLIC LIBRARY”... .......

Shibpur Public library (Estd. 1874) is one of the oldest libraries of West Bengal with 42 thousand Books and Periodicals. It has various sections – General, Juvenile, Free Reading Rom and Students Text Book Library. The Library providing facilities to the Research Students.
Library owns many rare and old Books, and also many old periodicals. It holds very important positions in the cultural spheres of Howrah....
Shibpur Nanibhusan Singha Memorial Hall is one of the most popular auditorium of Howrah. This Hall is a totally renovated formation of the old Hall which was established on 1930, inaugurated by the then Chairman of Howrah Municipality Late BARADA PRASANNA PYNE. The old Hall was damaged due to a massive earthquake . In the year 1952 the executive committee members of the Library .....
My heartiest welcome to all of you on behalf of a more than 140 years old Public Library which has become a legend of its own. Undoubtedly, this organisation has become to an institution has been the place of several educational and cultural activities and has benefitted generations of citizens . Perhaps it is oldest and biggest library of the entire district of Howrah and one of the oldest in India.

Shibpur Public Library has many old and rarest Books in the library. Since establishment the library officials took initiatives to keep the books on contemporary literature , education, science, social development etc. for future reference. And time to time the library committees purchased various books on different subjects and also magazines. The important collections of library are the almost all editions of PRABASI, and BHARATBARSHA, two very the then popular magazines of pre independence. We have all editions of collections of Rabindra Nath Tagore , Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and other legends.
Also we preserve the brilliant works of contemporary writers, scholars .
The Books and magazines are kept in serial manner, categorized in subject wise and preserve with full care. Our two staff Sunil Shee and Lina Dutta maintained the counter services and we all time trying to keep liaison with our beloved members.
This year we have already purchased books for Rs. 15000/- comprising articles, novels, stories, comics etc.
